Studies on the Physiological Characteristics in Blooming of Chinese Jujube

Abstract
Chinese jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Miller) investigated into blooming characteristics under natural condition and blooming response to photoperiod with determination of time course changes of carbohydrates contents in flowers and leaves.
Four cultivars of Moodeung, Geumsung, Jj-3 and Jg-10 produced more abundant flowers on the middle part of reproductive shoot than on the basal or upper part while Je-8 had many flowers on the middle to the upper part.
Blooming season of Chinese jujube ranged from June 10 to July 25 in general. Moodeung, Geumsung and Jj-3 were in full bloom from mid-June to early July while Je-8 and Jg-10 from mid- to late June. Moodeung, Guemsung and Jj-3 had more total number of flowers with a longer bloom period than Je-8 and Jg-10.
All of the 27 cultivars surveyed comprised two flowering types based on the time of the day it bloomed; seven cultivars of Moodeung, Geumsung, Jj-3, Ja-2, Jb-21, Jc-31 and Jk-4 bloomed in the afternoon, whereas another 20 cultivars in the morning.
For the induction of blooming, the afternoon-blooming type needed photoperiod of 12, while the morning-blooming type did not show a dark period of definite hours.
There was not significant difference between the 2 types in the level of total carbohydrate, starch, total sugar, reducing sugar and nonreducing sugar contents of flowers and leaves as related by the time courses of a day.
